HOPE’s 8th Annual Charity Golf & Tennis Classic Raises More than $150K

WHAT: Home Ownership for Personal Empowerment, Inc. (HOPE) announces that with the support of title sponsor, City National Bank, and 40 other outstanding corporate partners it has raised more than $150K to provide homes for individuals with developmental disabilities. The money was raised via HOPE’s 8th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic, which was held on November 2nd, at Old Ranch Country Club and Seal Beach Tennis Center. The tournament saw 150+ golfers and tennis players come together in competition to support this cause. The event culminated in a tournament dinner, emceed by ABC7 Sports Anchor Rob Fukuzaki.
During the dinner HOPE’s Executive Director, Kristin Martin, announced a new 80 by ‘18 initiative, “Benefits from this year’s Tournament will be dedicated to the purchase and renovation of new affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities. We have set a goal to double our capacity in the next three years! So that means making housing available for at least 80 more people. Our slogan will be 80 by ’18! We hope you are as excited as we are about making this goal a reality.”
Kristin then went on to reveal that HOPE that day had closed escrow on a four unit detached property site located on Daisy Avenue in Long Beach that they purchased with the proceeds from last year’s tournament. This new HOPE location will house a total of 8 tenants and be a part of a Supportive Living Services (SLS) model. An on-site resident coordinator will be on premises 24/7 to assist with a broad range of services that include budgeting and paying bills, cooking, cleaning, shopping, arranging recreation, and vocational support.
This event could not be possible without the golfers, tennis players, dinner attendees, sponsors, donors and especially community volunteers. Fifty volunteers from all across the region came together to serve 188 hours at event registration, as cashiers, on the course, and selling raffle tickets. Day of event donations surpassed $20K due to their passionate efforts.
Golf play was competitive at Old Ranch Country Club’s par 72 course. The winning foursome from the Integrated Life / Corina De Leon team was Joseph De Leon, John Betham, CJ Nelson, and Phillip Avila. Tennis matches held at Seal Beach Tennis Center saw equally stiff competition with Bernie Pearl taking top prize.
