WHAT: On October 24, 2015 Rebuilding Together Long Beach (RTLB) and Home Ownership for Personal Empowerment, Inc. (HOPE) will be completing a “Lawn to Garden” initiative in conjunction with the Long Beach Water Department and the Surfrider Foundation. More than 25 volunteers from Johnson Controls, The US Attorney’s Office, Molina Healthcare and the International Association of Events and Exhibitors will participate as part of a collaboration to mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought and improve the homes and lives of several low income Long Beach residents with developmental disabilities.
Lawns on three adjacent HOPE homes will be removed, and regional vegetation will be planted during the daylong event. This project will lower the expenses of HOPE residents, contribute to water conservation, create a beautiful landscape within the neighborhood and engage the public in an impactful community event. HOPE residents often do not have the ability to manage the physical labor or cover the costs associated with transitioning to a more sustainable garden. The partnership between volunteers, the nonprofit sector and the city of Long Beach makes this transformation possible.

About Home Ownership for Personal Empowerment, Inc. (HOPE): HOPE’s mission is to create stable, affordable housing options for people with developmental disabilities.
The value of empowering individuals to live as active and contributing members of their community is at the very heart of HOPE. And there’s no doubt—living a life as independently as possible, and having a place to call home, changes people’s lives.
HOPE partners with Regional Centers to offer a variety of housing programs. Regional Centers are private, nonprofit corporations that contract with the State Department of Developmental Services to provide or coordinate services and supports for individuals with developmental disabilities that include autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and epilepsy.
Since 1995 HOPE’s programs have been providing opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to live a life they may have only dreamed about. Whether living in affordable housing, state-licensed group homes, or in a college dorm setting, HOPE’s tenants are making their dreams come true.
